The web is a treasure trove of great classic literature. For teachers with limited resources, the internet is an invaluable resource in tapping into these literary treasures. For interested children, the internet allows them instant and free access to the classics. By Gosh is a wonderful resource for parents, children and teachers looking to read for their own personal pleasure, read alouds with their kids, or instruction in the classroom.

For children, I recommend these areas:
  • Classic Stories for Kids
  • Illustrated Classics for Younger Children
  • Short Stories for Kids

But the site has many reading options and covers a wider range of reader levels and genres, including:

  1. Books by Gosh- This is an in-development part of the site which will have an interactive children's book that will run on your home PC. More interestingly, it seems that the reader will become the star of the show. I'm interested to see how this turns out and I'll be sure to keep you updated when it comes online.
  2. Features- Every month different stories are featured. Most of the time the featured stories have something to do with that month's holidays. For October, the featured stories were mainly spooky tales and stories.
  3. Short Stories- Short stories by notable authors like Roald Dahl, Robert Louis Stevenson and many, many more.
  4. Kids Classics- Classics like the Three Little Pigs, Mother Goose Rhymes, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, stories by Hans Christian Anderson, etc.
  5. Novels- Novels like Call of the Wild, The Christmas Carol and other classics.
  6. Nonfiction-Nonfiction stories by Henry Adams, Helen Keller and a few more. Not many selections here.
  7. Poems- Selection of well-known poems. Nothing too exciting unless you really love poetry.

The site is great for more developed readers, parents looking for children's read aloud, and teachers looking for great literature to incorporate into their classroom. But test the text out with your kids. If they can read 95% of the words then let them read the story. If not, choose an easier text. Reading should be fun and entertaining.

Enjoy!
