Election Day Edition: The Democracy Project

Students have a limited understanding about how our government and democratic system functions. On second thought, students and many adults have a limited understanding about how our government and democratic system functions. While PBS has consistently impressed me with the range and depth of curriculum and topics offered as well as the age range it covers, The Democracy Project is not as interactive and engaging as its other sites but still informative and easy to use. The Democracy Projects covers a very narrow topic range--how government affects me, what it's like to be President and what issues are important to you--but does it well.

What I Like:
Be President for a Day-Allows student to be President for a day and create their own Presidential itinerary and become the main story in a newspaper article.

Future Voter's Card-Sign up for a Future Voter's Card and choose issues that are most important to them. At the end there is a printable Future Voter's Card that summarizes the issues that are important for student, when he/she is eligible to vote, and has his/her name and signature. It's pretty official stuff and something kids would love.

How does Government Affect Me-Student can navigate around a town and see how government affects everything from hospitals to cafeteria lunches. It's a great way to educate kids about how important government is in our everyday lives.
